Description

The Edo side plate is 21.6cm across and 2.5cm high, with a low rim that turns up at the edge and a fine ridge running round it. The face and the rim carry a cream glaze, milky rather than white and faintly glossy. The glaze stops in a sharp line just below the rim, and below that the terracotta clay is left bare and matt, a warm tan running round the underside and the foot.

At 21.6cm this is a side plate rather than a dinner plate: bread and butter beside a bowl of soup, a couple of vegetables set down next to a main, a slice of cake with a fork. Stacked, the band of bare clay under each rim shows as a fine line between the plates. Stacked, the plates sit close, because the foot is shallow and the rim is low.

The plate is stoneware. The clay is a warm terracotta and the glaze is laid over it in two coats, mixed so that it reacts in the kiln, which is what leaves the tone and the texture varying from plate to plate. The Edo range runs to a dinner plate, a cereal bowl, a pasta bowl, a twelve piece dinner set and mugs in two sizes, in terracotta and in slate.
