Description

A 27cm dinner plate, 2.5cm deep, with a wide flat well and a low rim that turns up at the edge and rolls over. The face and the rim are glazed in a soft off white that pools paler at the edge and greys slightly towards the centre, and the glaze is left to stop where it runs. Underneath, the clay is bare: a warm sandy terracotta that shows as a band all the way round beneath the rim and across the whole of the foot.

27cm is a full dinner plate, wide enough for a main course with the rim left clear, and the edge turns up enough to hold a sauce rather than let it run to the table. Stacked, it is the terracotta band between the plates that reads rather than the white. At 2.5cm they stack close, so a set of them takes little cupboard depth.

The plate is stoneware made from terracotta clay, glazed twice over the rim and the face with the mix adjusted so the glaze reacts in the kiln. That is what varies the tone from plate to plate and leaves the pale flecking round the rim. The underside is left unglazed.
