Edo Large Stoneware Mug - Slate - Set of 2

Two tall stoneware mugs, each 11cm high and 8.5cm across, holding 395ml. The sides run close to straight from foot to rim, and the rim is finished by hand so it lifts and dips instead of sitting level. The handle is a wide loop. A pale grey glaze covers the body in vertical streaks and darkens to a rust brown along the rim and over the outside of the handle, while the bottom band is left bare and the dark clay shows underneath.

395ml is a full mug of tea or a long coffee, and at 11cm tall it stands a good way above the small Edo mug on the same table. The sides being close to straight rather than bellied means it takes up little more room than its own base and goes into a narrow gap on a shelf. The loop handle is wide enough to take a hand rather than a finger. Two come in the set.

The mugs are stoneware. No glaze goes on the foot at all, so a band of raw dark clay runs round the bottom, and where the glaze runs thin over the rim and the handle the clay beneath comes through brown. No two mugs streak the same way. The Edo mug is also made short, and in terracotta as well as slate.

How should they be looked after?

Wash them after every use to stop the glaze staining, with a mild detergent and without soaking. Handle them with care so the rims do not chip.
