Description

The Dudha is a reclaimed brick mould used as a shallow open box, 33cm long, 15cm across and 10cm high. The timber has weathered to a pale grey brown on the outside and is stained almost black inside, where the clay sat. Iron straps are pinned around each end with square headed nails, and the ends of the mould run on past the straps as wooden lugs with rounded corners, so the box is longer than the trough inside it.

The opening is 24cm long and 8cm wide, a narrow trough rather than a square well, and the whole box stands only 10cm high. That suits a windowsill, a shelf or the back of a worktop, where the length matters more than the height. It is used for storage as readily as for planting, and it is an indoor piece.

The wood is reclaimed and the straps are iron. Each mould was cleaned and lightly finished with its original markings left where they were, so the tone, the grain and the wear differ from box to box and no two finishes are the same. The box weighs 1.48kg.
