Description

This is a plant pot in black terracotta, 16cm across and 16cm tall, with a leaf pattern on its side. The branches spread down from the rim like fronds caught in a breeze, and where the design is drawn the black gives way to the bare clay, so the leaves show in the natural terracotta itself. A thin band of that same bare clay shows at the rim, a small detail that ties the pattern to the pot. The sides rise almost straight from a softly rounded base, a plain shape that lets the pattern do the work.

At 16cm across, it is a size for a small or medium houseplant: a fern, a young palm or a trailing plant on a windowsill, a bookshelf or a bench in the hall. We like it in a living room or on a kitchen sill, where the black holds its own against green leaves and pale walls. It works well in a group, beside pots of different heights and patterns, and on its own on a desk it gives a plant a proper home in place of a plastic nursery pot. It suits anyone who wants a black pot that is not plain, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a friend who keeps plants.

The pot is made entirely of terracotta and weighs 1.88KG, so it feels solid and substantial in the hand. Terracotta is a porous clay, so we would stand it on a saucer, or keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot inside and lift it out to water. That also lets you swap plants with the seasons without repotting. For styling, let the plant echo the pattern: a feathery fern or a palm with long, narrow fronds picks up the branches on the side, and the black looks especially good against light wood.
