Description
The Dia Tall is a cone rather than a drum: 51cm tall against 31cm across the base, so it is half again as tall as it is wide and the sides run at a steep angle from a narrow top to a broad foot. The jute is finer and more evenly woven than the Dia drums, a warm straw colour with the slub of the fibre still showing, and the whole surface is a single unbroken sweep with no seam interrupting it.
A cone this steep sends light down in a narrow spread rather than out sideways, so on a table lamp it lights the surface beneath it and little else, and on a floor lamp it draws the eye up the length of the shade. The proportion is the point: it repeats the line of a tapered base instead of capping it with a contrasting shape, which is why it suits a conical or a slim column base more than a squat one. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.72kg.
Jute is a plant fibre, coarse and hard wearing, and it is woven before being formed over the frame, so the tension and the grain differ from shade to shade. The Dia range also holds tapered drum shades from small to extra large, in natural jute and in an ink colourway. No bulb, base or fitting is included.

Frequently Asked
What base suits a tall cone?
A tapered or slim one, where the shade continues the line of the base rather than sitting on it as a contrast. On a squat round base the height tends to look top heavy.
How is it different from the ordinary Dia shades?
Proportion. The drum shades are wider than they are tall; this is 51cm tall against 31cm across, so it throws light down in a narrower spread.
Will it fit a ceiling pendant?
Yes. It is made for table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling use, and hung from a flex the cone reads well from below.
How do I handle it?
Hold it by the fitting and never by the jute. A microfibre cloth, gently, is all it asks for.
