Description

A sideboard, 50cm tall, in wood. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 107cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A sideboard is the one piece that stores a lot and still presents a surface, which is why it outlives most other furniture in a room. It works in a dining room, a hall or a living room equally.

Zinc left outdoors loses its shine within a season and then stays as it is, which is either the appeal or the reason to keep it inside. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. 6 drawers. 6 carrying handles.

An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board. Measure the doorway and the turn before the room. A sideboard is the piece most often bought and then returned because it will not go up the stairs. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
