Description

The Dalat is a ceramic lamp base in a double gourd shape: a wide low bulb, a sharp pinch at the waist, then a second smaller bulb tapering to a short neck. Fine horizontal bands run round the whole form, and the dry glaze has been washed back over them, so the surface reads pale sand on the ridges and grey in the hollows. The profile is not quite the same on both sides of the waist. A slim brass rod rises from the neck to a brass cup and a black lampholder, and a rust coloured cord runs from the base with a switch on it.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 33cm tall and 25cm across it is a wide base rather than a tall one, so it needs a surface with some depth to it: a sideboard, a console, a wide chest. Ceramic makes it heavy for its size at 3.5kg. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the cord runs 2.5m and the plug is UK and EU.

The base is ceramic, hand shaped and then finished with a dry glaze that is washed back by hand, which is what leaves the tone shifting band by band. No two come out the same. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

Does it come with a shade?

No. It is the base only, with a brass cup and a black lampholder on top. Supplied without a shade.

What makes the banding on the surface?

The form is shaped with fine horizontal ridges and the dry glaze is washed back over them by hand, so the tone lands differently on the ridges and in the hollows. No two bases come out the same.

What bulb does it take?

One E27, up to 60W. No bulb is included.

Is there a switch on the cord?

Yes. The switch sits on the 2.5m cord, so the lamp is switched at the cord rather than at the socket.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it, then wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the glaze.
