Description

This console table is made from fir and painted beige, with a long, flat top, an open shelf beneath it and two legs that give it its character. Each leg is built from flat panels meeting at right angles, so from the end it reads as a cross, and the grain of the wood shows through the paint as a soft texture. It measures 110cm long, 32cm wide and 80cm tall, and it weighs 14.18KG, so it is worth having a second pair of hands when you carry it into place.

The 32cm width is the figure that settles where it goes. It is slim enough for a hallway or landing where a deeper table would crowd the way, and long enough at 110cm to hold a bowl for keys, the post and a plant or two along the top. It also works behind a sofa, giving the back of the seating a finished edge, or against a living room wall beneath a mirror or a framed print. In a bedroom it makes a narrow dressing surface, and in a home office a place for files and a tray. The open shelf takes books, a pair of baskets or a low ceramic piece, keeping the everyday clutter off the top.

The frame is 100% fir with a painted finish, and the paint keeps the colour even while letting the texture of the timber come through. Fir is a softwood, so felt pads under heavy or sharp-based ornaments will help keep the paint looking its best. The maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download, so you can read through the build before the table arrives. For styling, set one taller piece towards one end of the top, keep the shelf for something low and wide, and leave the cross-shaped legs clear so their outline stays in view.
