Description

A side table, 42cm tall, in wood. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Height decides whether a side table is used: too low and a mug is a stretch, too high and it fights the arm of the chair. This one sits where most sofas and armchairs want it.

Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. A pair reads as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two will sit either side of a bed without crowding the table.

Judge the top, not the footprint. Room for a lamp, a book and a mug at once is a table that stays; room for a mug alone is a table that gets moved.
