Description

This snowflake stocking is a cheerful red with a deep white cuff, and its front carries a white envelope pocket printed DEAR SANTA in neat red capital letters. A small red button finishes the pointed flap, and white snowflakes are scattered over the red, some large and some tiny, from the cuff down to the toe. Two white pom-poms dangle from a red cord at the top corner, and a white hanging loop above the cuff takes it straight onto a hook. It measures 44.5cm high, 25.5cm across and 3.5cm deep, a good full-size stocking rather than a small tree ornament.

We would hang it from the mantelpiece on a stocking holder or a hook, though it looks just as much at home on a bedpost, a banister or the back of a bedroom door. The pocket is the part that makes it: there is room for a folded note to Santa, written in the days before Christmas and tucked in ready for Christmas Eve. On the morning itself, the stocking takes small gifts and treats, and the pocket can keep a reply safe. The red and white colouring sits well with traditional decorations and brings a bright, homely touch to a hallway or living room.

The white cuff turns over the top edge, the pocket sits flat on the front, and the snowflakes are picked out in white. The loop sits at the top of the cuff, keeping the stocking hanging straight with its pocket facing out. To keep it fresh from one year to the next, shake off any dust, wipe it gently with a soft dry cloth and store it flat with the rest of the decorations. Where several stockings hang in a row, its pocket makes it easy to tell apart, and if you are giving it, a handwritten note already tucked inside the envelope is a lovely surprise to unpack.
