Description

This is a deep, round stoneware bowl, painted by hand with broad yellow stripes running from the base to the rim and lettered with the word POPCORN across one side. Small painted dots cover the inside, so the bowl looks as cheerful from above as it does from the side. It measures 17.5cm across and 13.5cm tall, with sides that widen gently towards the top, which makes it noticeably deeper than an everyday bowl. At 1.11KG it has a reassuring weight and sits firmly wherever it is placed.

Because it is deep and steady, it makes useful everyday storage. On a kitchen counter it keeps wooden spoons, whisks and spatulas upright and close to the hob, or gathers the odds and ends that collect on a windowsill. In a hallway it is a cheerful catch-all for keys, sunglasses and post; on a desk it holds pens, washi tape and paper clips; in a child's bedroom it keeps crayons, hair clips and small toys in one place. The bright stripes suit a playful scheme, and it looks just as good as a purely decorative piece on an open shelf or a kitchen dresser.

The bowl is made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic fired at high temperature, which is why it feels so solid in the hand. Its decoration is painted by hand, so the stripes vary a little in width and depth of colour from one to the next, and that small irregularity is part of its charm: no two bowls are quite the same. For styling, set it beside plain white or natural pieces so the stripes can do the talking, or stand it on a stack of cookbooks at the end of a shelf to give a quiet corner of the kitchen a lift.
