Description
The Chhavi is an armchair with a tall square back and low rolled arms, upholstered across the front, the back and both sides in a handwoven jute kilim. The pattern is a broad zigzag in chocolate, rust and cream stepping up the back, and the same weave wraps the arms and the seat rail. A line of studs runs along the lower edge of the seat rail and around the arms, and the frame beneath is solid mango wood, left rough sawn and pale, on square tapered legs.
It stands 97.5cm to the top of the back and 82.5cm across, which is wide for a single chair, and the seat sits 45cm from the floor, about the height of a dining chair and lower than a sofa. The seat is 44cm across and 46cm deep, so this is a chair to sit up in rather than sink into, which suits a bedroom corner, the end of a landing or a spare seat pulled up to a low table. It takes up to 180kg and weighs 17.2kg, so one person can move it.
The frame is mango wood and the upholstery is jute kilim, woven on a traditional loom and fitted by hand across the front, back and sides, so the zigzag lands in a slightly different place on every chair. The wood is left rough sawn rather than smoothed, which keeps the saw marks and the open grain in view under the pale finish.

Frequently Asked
How high is the seat?
45cm from the floor. The seat is 44cm wide and 46cm deep.
What is the fabric?
A handwoven jute kilim, fitted across the front, the back and both sides.
How much weight does it take?
Up to 180kg.
Will every chair carry the pattern the same way?
Not exactly. The kilim is handwoven and cut by hand, so the zigzag falls in a slightly different place on every chair.
How do I look after it?
Vacuum or brush the surface regularly with a soft head, never a rotating one, which damages the fibres. For small spills, lift the liquid with an absorbent tissue, then blot with a sponge or clean folded towel moistened in lukewarm water. Larger stains should be cleaned professionally, and the chair should be kept out of direct sunlight.
