Description

These are four stoneware cups, each holding 375ml and measuring 9cm across and 10cm tall, painted by hand with a soft, wavy check that runs all the way round the body. A glazed band circles the rim and drips down into the pattern, so the top and the body meet in a loose painted line rather than a ruled edge. There is no handle: the cup sits in the palm, and at 375ml it takes as much as a generous mug of tea or coffee. The whole piece is multicoloured, and the brushwork gives the check the slight wobble of a hand rather than the crisp edge of a print.

They are made for the drinks of an ordinary day: the first tea of the morning, a milky coffee with room to spare, or water at the dinner table. A handleless cup invites both hands round it, which suits a slow weekend pot of tea at the kitchen table or a tray carried to the garden. Stoneware holds heat well.
