Description

The Chanya is a two-tier jewellery box in mango wood, 23cm wide, 17.8cm deep and 10.8cm tall with the lid on. The lid is a flat plank with a small turned knob at its centre. Under it sits an upper tray divided into compartments, and the tray comes out to reach a second, deeper set of compartments in the box below. Every surface is bare wood, inside and out, with no lining.

The footprint is a little larger than a sheet of A5 paper, which is small enough for the corner of a dressing table or the top of a bedside drawer, and at 10.8cm closed it stays below the line of a table lamp beside it. The two tiers keep rings and studs apart from longer chains, and because the top tray comes out, everything in the lower section is reachable without unloading the upper one. The knob is the only thing that stands above the flat of the lid, so a second box will stack beside it rather than on it.

The box is mango wood throughout. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, and selling that waste wood gives the farmers a second income. The grain is left open and pale, so the figure across the lid and the depth of colour on the lower section differ from one box to the next.
