Description

The Chaay is a stoneware mug 8cm tall and 8.7cm across, and it comes in a set of two. It is glazed in two halves: a matt off-white carrying fine dark specks above, and a dark brown below that pits and mottles across the surface rather than running flat. Where the two glazes meet the white thins into a band of soft khaki over a fine rust-coloured line. The rim is faintly uneven and the handle is a deep round loop with room for more than one finger.

Each mug holds 325ml. At 8.7cm across it is a little wider than it is tall, which keeps the weight low and the mug steady on a tray, a desk or a breakfast table. The handle stands well clear of the side, so the hand is not against the wall of the mug while a hot drink is in it. Two come in a set.

The clay is speckled stoneware. A matt speckled white glaze goes over the whole mug and a contrasting glaze over the lower half, then the piece is fired at a high temperature in a reducing atmosphere, and that is what varies the tone from one mug to the next. The Chaay mug is also made in yellow.
