Description

These Caramella bowls take the shape of a wrapped sweet: a round stoneware bowl with a twisted wrapper end on either side that doubles as a handle. The set of three comes in three sizes, and each bowl wears its own hand-painted pattern: a loose swirl on the largest, spots on the middle bowl and bold stripes on the smallest, which together make a cheerful multicoloured trio. The smallest is 13cm long, 8cm wide and 4.5cm tall, the middle one 16.5cm long, 10cm wide and 7cm tall, and the largest 18.5cm long, 12cm wide and 9.5cm tall, so between them they cover a dip, a side and a pudding.

They were made with the Christmas table in mind. Fill the smallest with cranberry sauce or a dip, set the middle one out with nuts or olives, and give the largest a helping of trifle, soup or a pile of sweets for the sideboard on Christmas Eve. Because the shape is so plainly a wrapped sweet, they feel as at home at a family party as at a grown-up dinner, and they make a cheerful gift for anyone who likes their tableware with a sense of humour. Once the decorations come down, there is no need to pack them away: a small bowl of cereal, a side of rice or a snack on the sofa suits them just as well.

The bowls are 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic that holds heat well, and the decoration is painted by hand, so small differences in the brushwork are part of the character. They go in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so you can warm a pudding through and wash up without fuss. The set weighs 0.74KG. For styling, line all three up on a wooden tray or board, largest to smallest, and let the patterns do the work; the styling props shown are not included.
