Description

A small jug 12cm tall and 7cm across, straight sided, with the rim folded out at one point into a lip to pour from. There is no handle: the body is a plain cylinder from foot to rim. The glaze is a pale greyish cream carrying fine dark specks all over, and it breaks to a dark mocha brown in a band at the rim and again at the foot, with one run of glaze showing down the side.

At 350ml this is a table jug rather than a serving one, and milk, cream or a sauce are what it is made for. At 12cm it stands low enough to leave in the middle of a breakfast table without blocking the view across it. A lidded jar and a beaker are made in the same glaze. Because there is no handle it is held around the body, which the straight sides make easy, and it can be poured with either hand.

The jug is ceramic, made by hand in southern India using traditional pottery techniques. The glaze is reactive and is applied by hand, so it moves and settles differently in the firing on every piece and no two jugs carry the same scatter of specks or the same depth of brown at the rim. The workshop runs as a fair trade initiative, providing training and steady work for its makers, with a particular focus on employing women.
