Description
A pair of coffee mugs 8cm tall and 9.5cm across, with a round belly that pulls in to a small foot and a full loop handle. Each one holds 350ml. A creamy white glaze is laid over a darker body and breaks wherever it runs thin: a brown line at the rim, a brown ring round the foot, and brown along the outside of the handle. The white itself is flecked all over with dark specks, dense in places and sparse in others.
The two mugs in a set do not match. One may be speckled almost black down a whole flank while the other is freckled evenly all over, because the glaze finds its own way in the kiln each time. At 8cm tall and 9.5cm across the mug is wider than it is high, so it carries 350ml without standing tall, and the handle is a full loop rather than a small ear. Cam is made as a larger mug as well, and the range runs on to a jug, dipping bowls, a utensil holder and a lidded jar in the same mocha.
The mugs are ceramic and each one is made by hand. They are fired in a small kiln built from bricks and lit by an open fire, slow work that depends on the potter judging it right. The pottery is made in southern India as part of a fair trade project set up to train and employ men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds; it now employs forty people and works particularly at bringing women into the workplace. Because the glaze reacts differently in every firing, no batch comes out quite like the last.

Frequently Asked
How many mugs come in a set?
Two. Each is 8cm tall, 9.5cm across and holds 350ml.
Will the two mugs match?
No. The glaze reacts in the kiln, so the speckling and the depth of the brown differ on every mug, including the two that arrive together.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes.
What is the brown at the rim and the foot?
The darker body showing through where the white glaze runs thin over an edge. It is part of the finish.
How should they be washed?
Wash them after every use to prevent staining, using a mild detergent, and do not leave them to soak. Handle them with care to prevent chipping.
