Description

The Cala is a disc of reclaimed wood held upright on an iron stand, 50cm tall overall and 42cm across. The disc came off a bullock cart wheel. It is roughly oval rather than truly round, with a round hole through the middle and a raised collar around it on one face, and the grain has opened into long splits that run across the face and over the edge. Two blackened iron pins hold it clear of a flat rectangular base plate.

The base plate is only 15cm deep, so the piece will stand on a narrow console or a shelf as readily as on a wide one. At 15.1kg it is heavy for its size and stays where it is put. Stood on a console, the hole through the centre is left open to the wall behind it. Lit from the side, the splits across the face throw their own shadows.

The wood is reclaimed and the stand is iron, forged by hand. Each disc is chosen for its own patina, so the tone of the weathered surface, the depth of the splits and the shape of the outline differ from one piece to the next, and no two are the same. The whole piece weighs 15.1kg.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

50cm tall and 42cm wide, on a base plate 15cm deep.

What was the wood before?

Part of a bullock cart wheel, salvaged in India.

Is the stand included?

Yes. The disc is mounted on a hand forged iron stand and the two come as one piece.

Will every one look the same?

Not exactly. Each disc is chosen for its own character and patina, so the splits, the tone and the outline all vary.

How heavy is it?

15.1kg.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it over with a cloth from time to time so dust does not gather in the splits, and keep chemical cleaners away from it.
