Description

A set of two placemats, each 32 by 50cm, handwoven on a natural ground with narrow charcoal stripes running the length of the mat. At each short end a band of solid clay, a soft terracotta, closes the pattern off. The stripes are broken rather than continuous, made up of short dashes carried in the weave, and the ground between them is left the colour of the undyed yarn.

At 32 by 50cm each mat takes a dinner plate with the cutlery either side of it. Two of them lay one end of a table, or both sides of a small round one. The mats are thin at 0.5cm, so they lie flat from the first use and stack without bulk. Laid across the table rather than along it, the stripes run towards the diner and the clay bands sit to the left and the right.

The yarn is a blend of linen and cotton, dyed before it goes on the loom so the colour holds, and the mats are woven in a herringbone structure, which interlaces the threads in a zigzag and is what gives the fabric its strength. A Buna table runner is made in the same clay colourway. The set is two table mats and nothing else.
