Description

These are a pair of clear glass candle holders, each one mouthblown and made to be brought out every December. Both share the same shape: a fluted cup with a softly scalloped rim, a slender straight stem and a ribbed foot that flares out like a skirt. Partway up the stem is the detail that makes them: one holder carries a sculpted glass wreath tied with a bow, the other a little tiered Christmas tree dotted with tiny baubles. Each holder is 8cm across and 21cm tall, which gives a slim dinner candle real height without the whole thing feeling heavy on the table.

Because there are two, they work as a pair: either end of a mantelpiece, side by side on a hall console, or flanking a centrepiece on the Christmas dining table. Clear glass picks up the light of the flame and whatever sits behind it, so they suit a pale painted wall as happily as a dark wooden dresser. The festive motifs are small and set on the stem, which keeps them charming rather than novelty, and they sit comfortably among greenery, baubles and other glassware through the whole of the season. They also make a thoughtful gift for a host at Christmas, since the pair is ready to stand together.

Each holder is blown by mouth rather than pressed in a mould, and mouthblown glass naturally carries small differences from piece to piece, in the line of a rib or the curve of a rim.
