These are side plates in stoneware, sold as a set of four, each one 20.5cm across and 2cm tall. Every plate is painted to look like a wrapped present: fine vertical stripes run across a cream ground, and two lengths of ribbon cross the face to meet in a bow that stands up from the surface, so you can feel it under your fingertips as well as see it. At 20.5cm they are side plate size, made for a slice of cake, a couple of biscuits or a mince pie rather than a full dinner.

This is Christmas tableware, and it earns its place across the whole season. Put one at each setting for Christmas Day starters or bread, or bring them out with the coffee and Christmas cake when friends drop in. You could also keep them by the kettle through December for an afternoon biscuit. A set of four covers a small household or a couple who like to have people round. The wrapped-present design suits a festive breakfast or a gift exchange with mince pies. They also sit well under a mug of hot chocolate on a tray.

Stoneware is a dense, hardwearing ceramic, and these plates carry a handpainted finish, so the brushwork on the stripes and the bow has the small irregularities of work done by hand. They go in the dishwasher and the microwave, which makes warming a mince pie or clearing up after a busy day simple, but they are not for the oven. Each plate is shallow, with a gently raised rim around a flat centre. For the table, lay them on plain linen or over a larger dinner plate and let the ribbon pattern do the work.
