Description

This is a set of three stoneware candle holders, each a small round piece covered in a multicoloured geometric pattern of zigzags, triangles and diamonds. No two share a shape. The tallest is built in two tiers, a wide drum with a narrower drum sitting on top, and stands 8.5cm tall and 7.5cm across. The slimmest is a single upright cylinder covered in diamonds, 7cm tall and 5.5cm across. The lowest is a squat round piece, 5cm tall and 7.5cm across, with a band running round its middle between two rows of triangles. Each one has a socket in its top to take a single dinner candle.

Because they stand at three different heights, they make a stepped group the moment you put them down, which is the simplest way to give a few candles some rhythm. They are made for Christmas, and with their drum-like shapes and bright patterning they have the cheer of a row of toy drums, so they suit a festive dining table, a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a sideboard through December. Grouped together they fill a small spot on a hall table or a deep shelf; split up, one can sit at each end of the dinner table with the third in the centre.

Each holder is 100% stoneware, and the set of three weighs 0.41KG in total. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, fired at a higher temperature than earthenware. The pattern is decal decoration, a printed transfer applied to the surface, which is how the zigzags, diamonds and tiny dots keep such clean, sharp lines. For the neatest look, put the two-tier holder in the middle, keep the candles to a single shade so the patterns do the talking, and let the heights step down either side.
