Description

This is a set of three wooden candle holders, each one shaped and painted as a bearded king in a long robe. Two wear crowns and the third a tall cap with a jewel on the band, and every figure has its own face, beard and robe, so the three read as a little procession rather than three copies. They are made of beech and aluminium, with a small metal cup set into the top of each head where the candle sits, and each stands on a round, flat base. At 6cm across and 10.5cm tall, they are compact, multicoloured Christmas candle holders that sit comfortably in a narrow space.

Because they are short, they suit the places a tall candlestick would crowd: a windowsill, the front of a mantelpiece, a console or the middle of a sideboard. With a slim taper candle in each, the flame rises well above the kings, so the trio gains height while the figures themselves stay small enough to admire up close. We like them lined up in a row through the Christmas weeks, on the hall table or the dining table, and they make a cheerful gift for anyone who brings the same decorations out every year.

Beech is a close-grained hardwood that takes painted detail cleanly, which is why the faces, beards and crowns keep such crisp edges, and the aluminium cup lines the top of each figure where the candle goes. The bases are broad for the height of each king, and the bodies widen gently towards them, giving the three a chunky, friendly outline. The candles and other styling props shown are not included. For styling, keep the candles in one plain colour so the painted robes do the talking, and space the kings a hand's width apart so each face can be seen.
