Description

A placemat handwoven from natural rattan, 32cm across and 2cm thick. The rattan is undyed and left in its own tone, a warm mid brown that runs lighter and darker along the cane. A thick rope of twisted cane runs right round the edge, and at 2cm the mat sits noticeably proud of the table rather than lying flat against it.

A 32cm mat leaves a clear margin around a dinner plate, and four of them will set a table of 120cm or more without the mats meeting. It is made for a laid table, under ceramics and glassware, and works on bare wood or over a tablecloth. At 0.4kg it stays where it is put rather than lifting when a plate is drawn across it.

The mat is rattan throughout. Rattan is a climbing palm, cut and worked as a solid cane rather than sawn as timber, which is what lets it be bent and woven at all. Each mat is woven by hand to methods handed down through generations, and because the cane shifts in thickness and tone along its length no two carry quite the same grain or the same density of weave. The Bersama range also holds a fruit bowl, a bread basket, a utensil holder and napkin rings.

Frequently Asked

How big is each mat?

32cm across and 2cm thick.

What is it made from?

Natural rattan, woven by hand.

Is the rattan dyed?

No. It is left in its own tone, a warm mid brown that varies along the cane.

Will every mat look the same?

No. The cane varies in thickness and tone along its length and every mat is woven by hand, so the grain and the density of the weave differ between them.

How do I look after it?

Use a soft bristle brush regularly to lift dust out of the weave, and wipe it clean only with a soft dry cloth. Because the material is a natural fibre, keep harsh chemical cleaning products away from it.
