Description

This yellow stoneware bowl is built up like a flower head, with broad overlapping petals that rise into a soft, wavy rim. It measures 25.5cm across and 18cm tall and holds 2250ml, which puts it at the size of a generous serving bowl rather than a single portion. At 1.424KG it is a substantial piece of stoneware, and it looks it. We like the way the glossy glaze gathers along the raised edge of each petal, so the yellow reads deeper at the ridges and paler across the open faces, giving the surface real depth.

It is food safe, so it can go straight to the table: a mixed salad for a family supper, a pile of fruit on the kitchen counter, bread rolls at the centre of a dinner party, or crisps when friends visit. The tall petals around the rim frame whatever it holds, which suits leafy salads and fruit particularly well. Between meals it works as a centrepiece on a dining table or sideboard, or as a bright point of colour on a living room shelf or a deep window sill. Set a potted trailing plant within the bowl and let the stems fall across the petals for a softer, livelier look.

It is made entirely of stoneware and finished in a glossy glaze. It is dishwasher safe, which makes clearing up after a meal simple, but it is not microwave or oven safe, so warm food in another dish before it comes to the table. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and the wavy, uneven rim means the bowl looks a little different from every side as you turn it. For styling, pair the yellow with pale wood, linen and warm neutrals, or stand it beside taller ceramics with ridged surfaces so the glossy petals catch the light.
