Description

The Basilano 1 is a clear glass pendant in the chandelier tradition, with eight curving glass arms set around a central glass column, hung on a chrome chain from a chrome ceiling canopy. The body is steel in a chrome finish, strings of glass beads swag between the arms and faceted drops hang beneath them, so the whole light glitters whenever the bulbs are lit. It is 130cm tall overall and 82cm in diameter, a generous size that wants a room with height and space around it. Each arm ends in a candle-style holder for an E14 bulb of up to 40W, and the bulbs are not included. It is rated IP20, which settles where it goes: indoors, in a dry room.

We think it is at its best over a dining table, where eight points of light spread across the whole table and the clear glass sparkles above the meal. It suits a living room or a high-ceilinged hallway just as well. Because the glass is clear and the metal is bright chrome rather than a colour, it sits as happily in a pale, painted room as in a richer, darker scheme. With eight bulbs sharing the work, the light reaches well into the corners rather than pooling in one spot.

The frame is steel with a chrome finish, and the arms, column, beads and drops are clear glass. There is no switch on the light itself, so it is controlled from your wall switch, and it runs on a 220-240V, 50/60Hz mains supply. As a wired-in fitting it is installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions are available as a download. It weighs 9.826KG packed, so it is worth having a second person on hand while it is unpacked and lifted into place. Candle-shaped E14 bulbs of 40W or less suit the holders best.
