Description

The large tall Baba is a lamp base of clear recycled glass, blown into a teardrop 50cm high and 24cm across at its widest, narrowing to a neck at the top. The glass carries the dents and ripples of being worked by hand while it was still molten, so the surface is uneven and catches light along the marks. A chrome collar caps the neck and carries a black lampholder with a shade ring. The flex is brown and runs up inside the glass, in full view through it.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 50cm it is the tallest of the eleven Babas and the one for a sideboard, a console or a hall table where height is the point. Clear glass keeps it light in a room rather than adding a solid object to it, and because the flex shows through the glass the cord reads as part of the base instead of something to hide behind it. It takes an E27 bulb, the cord runs 2.5m, the plug is UK and EU, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The glass is recycled and hand blown, and the hammered surface is made while the glass is still molten, so no two bases carry the same pattern of dents. The collar and stem are chrome. The Baba range runs to eleven lamp bases in clear, green and burnt amber, in tall and wide shapes and in two sizes. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

Frequently Asked

Does it come with a shade?

No. It is the base only, with a black lampholder and a shade ring on top. Supplied without a shade.

What is the maximum bulb wattage?

It takes an E27 screw fitting. Fit no more than the maximum wattage marked on the lampholder.

How is it different from the large wide?

The large wide is 41cm tall and 33cm across against 50cm and 24cm here. This one stands taller on a narrower footprint.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it and take any shade off, then wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
