Description

A pillar candle holder 27cm tall on a 10.5cm base, forged from iron and finished in aged brass. A wide flat dish sits at the top with a single spike standing up from the centre of it, and below that the stem runs down through a tapered pear, two stacked spheres and a second, longer pear before flaring out into a trumpet foot with a thin flat brim. The whole of it is hammered into broad shallow facets, and the brass reads pale gold on the raised planes and a dark brown in the hollows.

The spike holds the candle: a pillar is pressed down onto it and stays put, and the dish beneath catches the wax as it runs. At 27cm the flame sits well above a table top, so this is a console, a mantelpiece or the middle of a dining table rather than a bedside. It stands on a shelf and takes a wide pillar candle. The foot flares wide from a narrow stem, which is what keeps a tall candle steady.

The holder is iron, forged and then given an aged brass finish. Hammering by hand leaves tool marks and small differences in the surface, so the facets and the depth of the brass vary from one holder to the next. Ayo is made in this one size. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

27cm, on a base 10.5cm across.

What candle does it take?

A pillar. A spike in the centre of the dish holds it, so the candle is pushed down onto that rather than left to sit loose.

Does it catch the wax?

The dish under the spike is flat and wide, so wax running down the side of the candle collects on it.

Is the brass solid?

No. It is forged iron with an aged brass finish over it.

How do I look after it?

A mild dish soap and warm water after each use will take off any wax before it builds up. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the finish. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
