Description

The Ayee is made from one continuous rod of iron, bent by hand and finished in aged brass. On the surface the rod loops twice, once into a wide open circle and once into a long narrow loop pulled out to the side, and those two loops are the whole of the base. From them the line rises into two upright stems of different heights, each topped by a small tapered cup that takes a dinner candle. It stands 45cm at the taller stem and covers 36 by 17cm on the surface.

The two stems stand at different heights, so the flames sit at two levels rather than in a row, and the open base leaves the line of the rod visible right through the middle of the piece. At 45cm it is too tall to see across on a dining table, so a console, a sideboard or a hearth is where it goes.

The holder is iron under an aged brass finish. Metalworkers forge it and then shape and twist the rod by hand, so the hammer marks are left along its length and the loops fall at slightly different angles on every one. Candles are not included.
