Description

A sofa, 130cm wide, in black. At 130cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A sofa sets the geometry of everything else in the room, so it is placed first and the rest is arranged to it. Against the longest unbroken wall is the safe answer; floating it with a console behind is the one that makes a large room feel deliberate.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often. It is rated to 220kg. Arms at 65cm clear most table aprons.

What makes a seat comfortable for an hour is different from what makes it comfortable for a minute. Support under the thigh and at the base of the back is what decides the hour; padding is what decides the minute. Anything sat on daily loosens eventually. Checking and nipping up the fixings once a year is the whole of the maintenance, and it is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that develops a wobble it never loses.
