Description

A rectangular wall mirror 90cm tall and 60cm wide, set in a wide flat border upholstered in handwoven jute. The kilim is a coarse open weave in warm straw, with dark brown and near-black figures worked into it in chevrons and diamond bands, and the pattern does not repeat exactly from one side to the next. A twisted rope of plain jute runs round the edge of the glass where the fabric meets it, and the corners of the frame are softened rather than left square.

At 90 by 60cm this is a mirror for a wall rather than a shelf, and it hangs either way up: 90cm tall in portrait, or 90cm across in landscape above a chest of drawers or a mantelpiece. It stands only 3cm off the wall, so it reads as a panel set against the plaster rather than a frame projecting from it.

The frame is jute, woven as a kilim on a handloom and then upholstered onto the mirror frame by hand, so the pattern sits where the weaver put it and the density of the dark figures varies from one mirror to the next. The back is boarded and carries two rings for hanging. Arjun is made in this one size.
