Description
This white MDF mantel plaque carries the old saying April showers bring May flowers, set above a soft border of wildflowers in a watercolour style. The first three words run across the top in neat blue-grey serif capitals, and May flowers follows in a flowing script, so the line ends on a gentle, handwritten note. Beneath it, a meadow of pink, blue, yellow and lavender blooms rises on slender green stems along the bottom edge, with the white ground left clean around them. It is a slim rectangular block, 30.5cm long, 6cm tall and 3cm deep, so it sits long and low and catches the eye without taking up the room a framed print would.
Its natural home is a mantelpiece, where the long shape fills the gap between candlesticks or a clock, but it suits any narrow ledge: a windowsill, a bookshelf, a hall console or the top of a dresser. The pastel colours sit happily with white, cream, sage and soft blue rooms, and with cottage, country and farmhouse styling. Put it out as the evenings lighten and the garden starts to stir, and it brings a cheerful nod to the turn of the season indoors. At 3cm deep it fits the narrowest of shelves, and at 6cm tall it sits low in front of a mirror or picture without hiding it.
The plaque is made from MDF, a wood-fibre board, with the white ground, lettering and flowers printed across its front, and at 3cm deep it is a proper block rather than a thin sheet. Looking after it is simple: dust it with a soft dry cloth, and keep it indoors, away from damp and steam, as MDF is happiest kept dry. We like it on a mantelpiece beside a jug of fresh or dried flowers and a pair of candles, and it makes a cheerful small present tucked in with a bunch of tulips.
