Anda Mango Wood Egg Holder - Natural

A mango wood board 31cm long and 11.5cm across, cut with twelve round hollows in two rows of six, each one sized to hold an egg upright. An iron handle is fixed at each end, dark against the pale wood. The board stands 5cm high and every hollow is dished rather than cut square, so an egg sits down into it instead of balancing on a rim.

Twelve is a box and a half, which is the point of it: eggs come off the counter and go straight in, and the board carries to the table by its handles. At 31cm by 11.5cm it takes a narrow strip of worktop rather than a shelf, and it still reads as an object when the hollows are empty.

The wood is mango and the handles are iron. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, and the offcuts are what these are made from. The grain runs differently through every board and the surface is left untreated.

No. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will nourish and protect it, though it will darken the tone.

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. The colour may change over time, which is the wood rather than a fault.
