Description
Our Amalia bowl is a wide, generous stoneware bowl, 24cm across and 8cm tall, with a vivid reactive glaze inside that runs out from the centre in streaks of blue. Reactive glazes shift as they fire, so the pattern varies from piece to piece and no two bowls come out quite alike. The rim is uneven, rising and dipping all the way round, and the outside is speckled and textured, which gives the whole bowl a relaxed, rustic look. It holds 1400ml, which makes it a serving bowl rather than an everyday cereal bowl.
Set it in the middle of the table for a green salad, a pile of pasta, roast vegetables or a heap of fruit to share. The low, open shape is easy to reach into from every side, and it suits a slow weekend lunch as well as supper with friends. It earns its place in the kitchen too: it goes in the oven, so a gratin or a crumble can bake in it and come straight to the table, and it goes in the microwave for warming leftovers through. The streaked blue glaze looks good on a plain linen cloth or a wooden table.
It is made of 100% stoneware and weighs 1.086KG, so it has a solid, reassuring weight in the hand. Stoneware holds heat well, which helps a baked dish stay warm while you serve it. Care is simple, because it goes in the dishwasher with the rest of the plates after dinner. Inside, the glaze has a glossy surface; outside, the speckled finish has more texture under the fingers. For styling, let it be the one patterned piece among plain white plates, or fill it with lemons on a sideboard between meals, where the blue streaks show from above.
