Description

A pair of tall mugs in white clay, each 10cm high and 8cm across, straight sided from base to rim with no taper. The outside is scattered with black splatter thrown on by hand, fine specks with a few larger blots and short dashes among them, densest around the middle of the body and thinning towards the base. Inside, the glaze is plain off white and carries no splatter at all. The rim is left slightly uneven rather than turned true, and the handle is a loop that springs from just below the rim and returns two thirds of the way down.

Two mugs come in a set. At 350ml this is the taller of the two Ama sizes and takes a full mug of tea or coffee with room left below the rim. The straight sides and the close-set handle mean a pair stands side by side on a shelf without much room between them. Ama is made as a short mug as well, which gives two heights in the same marking.

The body is white clay under a glaze. The mugs are handmade in Vietnam by artisans working with techniques some of which are thousands of years old, and every piece is shaped and painted by hand. Because the splatter is thrown rather than printed, no two mugs carry the same marking, and the two in a set do not match each other.
