Description

Our Alden is a round coffee table built around its base. Two flat panels meet in a cross beneath the top, one pierced by a large open oval and the other cut away in deep curves above and below, so light passes through the middle and the table looks lighter than its size suggests. The top is 80cm across and the table stands 45cm tall. Top and base are MDF faced with fir veneer, so every surface carries the grain of real wood in a brown that runs from the top to the floor.

At 45cm tall it sits low in front of a sofa or between a pair of armchairs, and at 80cm across it suits a living room where floor space matters. The round top leaves an easy path around it, which helps in a smaller sitting room, a snug or a reading spot by the window. There is room on top for a table lamp, a short stack of books, a vase of cut stems or a ceramic piece or two. In a larger open-plan space it can anchor a seating area, set on a rug in front of the sofa.

Fir veneer is a thin layer of real fir laid over the MDF core, and MDF gives that veneer a flat, even surface to sit on, so the grain runs cleanly across the whole top. The table arrives for self-assembly, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download, so you can read them through first. It weighs 10.98KG, which keeps it manageable to move when you rearrange the room. For styling, keep the top fairly clear so the grain shows, and set the table on a rug with some texture: the curved cut-outs of the base stand out best against a soft weave.
