Description

The Akurdi double wall light sets two ribbed glass cylinders end to end on a short horizontal bar, carried out from a round wall plate on a straight arm. Each cylinder is closed at its outer end with a solid brass cap and held at its inner end in a brass collar, and the ribbing runs the full length of the glass so the tube reads as a row of fine vertical lines. The glass is clear and the brass is a warm aged tone rather than a bright one. It measures 47cm across, stands 12cm tall and projects 17cm from the wall.

Clear glass hides nothing, so the lit bulbs sit in view inside the cylinders and the light leaves along the wall in both directions. The proportions are the placement: 47cm wide and 12cm tall is a band rather than a shape, which fits the strip of wall above a mirror or a framed picture, and the 17cm projection holds the glass clear of the wall face. It takes two E14 bulbs up to 25W each and it is dimmable. The rating is IP44, which covers splashing from any direction and allows it in a bathroom. The cord runs 80cm.

The cylinders are glass and the bar, arm, collars and caps are iron finished in brass. Each cylinder is moulded, so the depth of the ribbing and the fine bubbles trapped in the glass differ from one to the next. The Akurdi range also holds a single wall light on a cranked arm and a taller vertical light made to flank a mirror. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

How much wall does it need?

It is 47cm across, so allow a clear run of around 60cm to keep it off whatever sits beside it. Above a mirror, centre it on the mirror rather than on the wall, because the eye reads the two together.

Are the bulbs on show?

Yes. The glass is clear and ribbed rather than frosted, so the shape of the bulb is visible through it. A bulb with a neat filament suits it better than a large globe.

Does it have to go in a bathroom?

No. IP44 is more protection than a dry room needs, so it works just as well in a hallway or above a dressing table.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the glass cool, then run a dry microfibre cloth along the ribs rather than across them. Keep abrasives and harsh chemicals away from the brass.
