Description

The Aggua is a round-bellied vase in earthenware, 20cm high and 21.5cm across, with a wide flared mouth that opens 15cm. A raised ridge runs round the shoulder and divides the form in two, and below it the body swells out and then draws in again to a small flat foot. The glaze is a rust brown broken all over with pale flecks and darker pooling, heaviest around the rim and thinning as it runs down.

The opening is 15cm, which is wide enough to take branches or a loose bunch of dried stems without pinning them into a shape. At 20cm high it sits on a shelf, a console or a dining table without breaking the line across it. It weighs 1.191kg empty, so it stays steady under a tall arrangement.

The clay is earthenware and the glaze is reactive, put on by hand and left to move in the heat of the kiln. That is why the tone and the pattern differ from one vase to the next, sometimes markedly, and why no two come out alike.
