Description

A shallow bowl carved from mango wood, 30cm across and 8cm deep, with a rim left irregular rather than turned true, so the outline waves a little and the wall thickness changes around it. The grain runs across the floor of the bowl in bands, light against darker, and nothing is applied over it.

Thirty centimetres across and only 8cm deep makes this a bowl for things that sit in a single layer: fruit on a counter, bread at a table, a salad served rather than tossed. On a round table it reads as a centre rather than as a serving dish waiting to be cleared.

The wood is mango, taken from trees cut once they have stopped bearing fruit, and each bowl is made from the offcuts that come out of that. It is why the tone and the run of the grain differ from one bowl to the next. The surface is left untreated.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

30cm across and 8cm deep.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

What does it suit?

It is shallow, so it holds things in a single layer: fruit, bread, or a salad already served.

Is the wood sealed?

No. Nothing is applied to the surface.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will protect the wood, though it will darken the tone.
