Abe Deconstructed Linen Armchair - Rust

An armchair upholstered in rust linen on a solid mango wood frame stained a dark chocolate brown. The seat and back are separate filled cushions and the arms are padded and rolled, but the outside of each arm is left open: an oatmeal jute panel is stretched across the frame in place of a covered side, so the way the chair is built stays visible from outside. A band of the same jute runs across the front below the seat, and it stands on four turned wooden legs.

The seat sits 54cm from the floor, 59cm across and 71cm deep, inside an overall 80cm by 90cm. At 71cm the seat is deep, so the back cushion does the work and the chair is one to sit right back in rather than perch forward on. It takes a load of up to 125kg.

The upholstery is linen and the frame is mango wood. The linen is stitched and finished by hand, and the jute panels and the stained wood are left on show rather than covered over, which is what the range is built around. The same chair is made in olive, stone and charcoal linen, in a natural stripe, and in a moss velvet.

How is the linen looked after?

Vacuum it or go over it with a soft brush regularly to lift surface dust, but never with a rotating vacuum head, which damages the fibres. Ingrained dust abrades the fabric and shortens its life. Spot clean small spills only: lift the liquid with absorbent tissue, then blot with a sponge or a clean folded towel wrung out in lukewarm water, and dry the area with warm air from a hair dryer to avoid a water mark. Larger or stubborn stains should go to a professional. Keep the chair out of direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and yarns.
