Description

The Knightsbridge 5A unswitched round pin socket is designed for dedicated lighting circuits and lower-power appliances that use a 5A round pin plug rather than the standard 13A rectangular plug. The socket sits behind a black nickel screwless faceplate with a black insert and a low-profile design that projects just 4.3mm from the wall once fitted.

Used primarily for table lamps and floor lamps wired to a dedicated lighting circuit, the 5A round pin configuration allows these lamps to be controlled separately from the main ring circuit. This is common in period properties, hotels, and high-specification residential installations where lighting circuits are separate from appliance circuits. The unswitched design means the socket is always live when the circuit is energised, with control at the lamp switch or wall-mounted dimmer.

The screwless cover plate clips onto a separate steel sub-frame fixed to the back box, leaving no visible fixings on the wall. The black nickel finish provides a dark gunmetal tone that pairs well with industrial, contemporary and dark-toned interiors. The built-in gasket between the cover plate and sub-frame gives a flush finish and prevents the plate from rattling once fitted. Certified to BS 546, the socket requires a minimum 25mm back box depth and carries a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked

What is a 5A round pin socket used for?

5A round pin sockets are used primarily for table lamps and floor lamps on dedicated lighting circuits, common in period properties and high-specification installations where lighting is separate from the main 13A ring circuit. They accept a three-pin round plug, not the standard UK rectangular plug.

Can this socket be used with a dimmer?

The socket itself is unswitched and does not have dimmer functionality. Dimming control would typically be provided by a separate wall-mounted dimmer switch on the same circuit, or by a dimmer built into the lamp itself.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 25mm back box depth is needed. The screwless cover plate adds 4.3mm of projection from the wall once fitted.

Is the screwless plate removable for redecorating?

Yes. The cover plate clips onto a separate steel sub-frame fixed to the back box. The cover can be removed for painting around the socket and re-clipped without re-wiring.
