Description
The Knightsbridge 20AX 2-way retractive switch module is a front-mounting grid component rated at 20AX on 230V AC, designed for momentary-contact applications such as door entry systems, push-to-exit buttons, lighting automation and access control. The module clips into Curved Grid Systems and uses a white rocker printed with 'PRESS' to indicate its retractive function.
Retractive switching differs from latching in that the rocker returns to its starting position when released, making the module suitable for circuits requiring a momentary pulse rather than maintained switching. Common installations include door release mechanisms in residential and commercial buildings, push-button lighting controls in hallways and common areas, and integration with automation systems that read button-press signals. The 20AX rating supports loads up to 4,600W on 230V circuits, higher than the 10AX standard used in most domestic light switches.
The module fits a 35mm minimum back box depth and measures 25mm wide by 55mm tall, occupying one module width within a Curved Grid System. The thermoset resin construction resists impact and wear, while the anti-microbial finish tested to ISO 22196:2011 reduces bacterial growth on the surface — particularly relevant in high-traffic commercial and healthcare environments. The white finish coordinates with the full Curved Edge Switches and Sockets range, allowing mixed switch types within the same grid faceplate. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor locations.

Frequently Asked
What does retractive mean on a switch?
Retractive means the switch rocker returns to its starting position when you release it, rather than staying in the pressed position. This creates a momentary contact pulse, making it suitable for door release buttons, push-to-exit controls and automation triggers that need a brief signal rather than maintained on/off switching.
What is the 20AX rating for?
20AX means the switch can handle up to 20 amps on AC circuits, equivalent to 4,600W at 230V. This is double the 10AX rating used on most domestic light switches, allowing the module to control higher-load circuits or inductive loads such as motors and transformers commonly found in automation and access control systems.
Is this compatible with all Knightsbridge grid systems?
No. This module is designed specifically for Knightsbridge Curved Grid Systems. It will not fit standard flat grid systems or non-Knightsbridge grid products. Check your existing grid faceplate model before ordering to confirm compatibility.
Can it be used in bathrooms or outdoors?
No. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor locations only. For bathroom zones requiring splash protection or outdoor installation, choose products with IP44 or higher ratings.
