Description
The Knightsbridge 13A plug top comes pre-fitted with a 5A replaceable fuse and a white polypropylene body with a screw-type cord grip. The 5A fuse is designed to protect low-power appliances — lamps, phone chargers, fans, radios — where the current draw is typically under 1,150W, providing circuit protection appropriate to the device rather than defaulting to a 13A fuse that offers less sensitive protection.
The screw cord grip secures the cable by tightening a clamp directly onto the outer sheath rather than relying on the terminals alone to hold the cable in place. This prevents the cable from being pulled out of the plug under strain and keeps the live, neutral and earth connections secure during everyday use. The plug meets BS 1363-2 and carries the BSI Kitemark, confirming it has been independently tested for mechanical strength, electrical safety and resistance to heat and impact.
The white polypropylene construction provides Class I insulation with an IP20 rating, making the plug suitable for indoor use in dry locations. The compact 52mm height and 50mm width fit standard UK plug sockets without blocking adjacent outlets on a twin or quad socket. The fuse is user-replaceable by removing the small screw on the fuse carrier, allowing the plug to be reused if the fuse blows rather than discarded.

Frequently Asked
Why does this plug come with a 5A fuse instead of 13A?
A 5A fuse is designed to protect low-power appliances drawing less than 1,150W, such as lamps, radios, phone chargers and fans. Using a 5A fuse on these devices provides more sensitive circuit protection than a standard 13A fuse, which may not blow quickly enough to prevent damage to the appliance in a fault condition.
Can I replace the 5A fuse with a different rating?
Yes. The fuse is user-replaceable by removing the small screw on the fuse carrier. Replace with a fuse rating appropriate to the appliance — consult the appliance manual for the correct fuse rating. Standard UK domestic fuse ratings are 3A, 5A, 10A and 13A.
How does the screw cord grip work?
The screw cord grip tightens a clamp directly onto the outer sheath of the cable, preventing the cable from being pulled out of the plug under strain. This keeps the live, neutral and earth connections secure during everyday use and is required by BS 1363-2 for safe plug construction.
Is this plug suitable for outdoor use?
No. The IP20 rating means the plug is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5mm but has no protection against moisture ingress. Use this plug only in dry indoor locations. For outdoor applications, use a plug and socket rated IP44 or higher.
