Description

The Knightsbridge 10A fan isolator switch is a triple-pole isolator designed to safely disconnect fan units from the electrical supply while leaving the associated lighting circuit live. The white thermoset resin faceplate is 86mm square with a 9mm square edge profile and an anti-microbial coating tested to ISO 22196:2011 standard, which inhibits bacterial growth on the surface.

Installed in bathrooms, utility rooms and storage areas where extractor fans are wired into the lighting circuit, the switch allows the fan to be isolated for maintenance or replacement without cutting power to the room's lighting. The triple-pole design isolates live, neutral and switched live connections simultaneously, providing a safer isolation point than a standard single-pole switch. The 10A rating suits most residential and light commercial extractor fan installations.

The faceplate fits standard UK single-gang back boxes with a minimum depth of 16mm and adds just 9mm of projection from the wall. Screw cap covers on the mounting screws give a finished appearance without visible fixings. The thermoset resin construction resists impact and heat better than standard thermoplastic plates, making it suitable for high-traffic or humid environments. Certified to EN 60669-1 and EN 60669-2-4 standards, the switch carries a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked

Why is a triple-pole isolator needed for a fan?

Many extractor fans are wired into the lighting circuit with a switched live connection that keeps the fan running after the light is turned off. A triple-pole isolator disconnects live, neutral and the switched live simultaneously, ensuring complete isolation during maintenance. A standard single-pole switch would only isolate one conductor.

Can this be used in a bathroom?

Yes, the IP20 rating is suitable for bathroom zones outside of direct spray areas (typically Zone 3 or outside zones). The anti-microbial coating is particularly useful in humid environments where bacterial growth on surfaces can be a concern. Check building regulations for the specific zone where the switch will be installed.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 16mm back box depth is needed. Standard 25mm or 35mm single-gang back boxes are compatible. The 9mm plate projection means the total depth from wall to faceplate front is 25mm with a 16mm box.

What is the anti-microbial coating?

The coating inhibits bacterial growth on the switch surface and has been tested to ISO 22196:2011, an international standard for measuring antibacterial activity on plastics and non-porous surfaces. This is useful in bathrooms and other areas where hygiene is a priority.
