What defines a Scandinavian dining table

Scandinavian design leans on natural wood, muted tones and shapes that stay out of the way of daily life. A danish dining table typically shows off the grain of solid oak or veneer over a sturdy core, with tapered or splayed legs that keep the whole piece feeling light. We look for tables where the joinery is neat and the finish is soft to the touch, so the surface ages gracefully rather than showing every mark.

Round and oval tops suit tighter rooms and open-plan corners, since there are no sharp edges to work around. Rectangular tables give more room for larger households and make it easier to seat extra chairs at either end. Extending designs bridge the gap, folding down for two and opening up when more people arrive.

Choosing the right size and shape

Before buying, we suggest measuring the room and allowing enough space to pull chairs out and walk behind them comfortably. A nordic dining table works best when it fits the daily headcount rather than the occasional crowd, with an extending option covering the busier days. Consider the height too, since some designs sit slightly lower and pair better with matching seating.

Wood tones matter for the wider room. Pale oak keeps things bright and open, while walnut adds depth against lighter walls and floors. Painted bases in soft neutrals bring contrast without pulling attention away from the tabletop.

Caring for wooden dining tables

Most oiled and lacquered tops need little more than a wipe with a damp cloth and a dry follow-up. We recommend using coasters and mats to guard against heat and moisture, and re-oiling oiled surfaces now and then to keep them looking fresh. Avoid dragging heavy items across the top to protect the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dining table should I choose?
Measure your room and leave enough clearance to pull out chairs and walk around them. Match the table to your everyday number of diners, and consider an extending design if you regularly host more people.

What wood is used for a danish dining table?
Most are solid oak or oak veneer. A few tables use walnut for a darker tone. Painted bases paired with wooden tops are also widely available across the range.

How do I care for a nordic dining table?
Wipe oiled or lacquered surfaces with a damp cloth and dry them afterwards. Use coasters and mats to protect against heat and spills, and re-oil oiled finishes occasionally to keep the surface in good condition.

Do these tables come with matching chairs?
Chairs are usually sold separately so you can pick a style and height that suits. Our Scandinavian dining chairs pair well with most of the tables in this range.
