What a faux fur throw adds

A faux fur throw is the quickest way to make a room feel warmer. The pile catches the light, softens the hard lines of a sofa or a bed frame, and invites you to pull it round your shoulders on a cold evening. It also brings texture to a scheme of smooth fabrics, which is why one throw can change the look of a room without any other change at all. Because the fibres are man-made, the look comes without any animal fur, and most of our faux fur throws are made from polyester. Velvet-backed and reversible

Almost half of our faux fur throws pair the fur with velvet on the other side. The velvet face is smooth and cool to the touch, so the throw feels different depending on which side you turn to the room. Choosing a shade

Cream and natural shades are the most versatile: they lighten a dark sofa, sit comfortably on white bed linen and work with almost any wood. Brown adds warmth and depth, especially against leather or a deep-coloured wall. Green is a good choice for a room full of plants or a scheme built around natural colours. On the sofa and the armchair

On a sofa, a faux fur throw looks best folded loosely over one arm or draped across the back cushions, where it is within easy reach. A smaller throw suits an armchair, laid over the seat back so the pile falls to the front. Pair it with a plain cushion so the texture has room to show, rather than competing with a busy pattern. If the sofa is a strong colour, a throw in a neutral shade calms it, while on a pale sofa a brown or green throw adds depth. At the foot of the bed

Folded across the foot of the bed, a faux fur throw adds an extra layer for cold nights and a finished look during the day. Plain throws and textured piles

Most of our faux fur throws are a single colour, so the texture of the pile does the work. A plain throw is easy to move from room to room and from season to season, because it never clashes with a pattern elsewhere. If you prefer a little more interest, look for the velvet-backed throws, which show a second colour and a different finish on the reverse. One plain throw in a neutral shade can then be joined by a second in a deeper colour for the colder months.

Caring for faux fur

Give the throw a shake when you fold it away, so the pile stays full. If the fibres start to flatten with use, brush them gently in the direction of the pile with a soft brush. Always follow the care label on the product page before washing, because the advice varies with the pile and the backing. Store the throw folded in a dry place when it is out of use for the summer, and keep it away from rough surfaces such as a sisal rug or a wicker basket, which can pull at the pile.
