Rooms that suit black spotlights
Black gives a spotlight a crisp, graphic outline against a pale ceiling and lets it sit back quietly against a dark one, so it works in bright and moody schemes alike. Most of our black spotlights suit a kitchen, where light aimed at the worktop or the island puts brightness on the task rather than in your eyes. Many suit hallways, living rooms and bedrooms, and many work in commercial spaces too. A few suit a study. At a desk, angle the light in from the side opposite your writing hand, so you are not working in your own shadow.
Black ceiling spotlights and wall spotlights
We stock black ceiling spotlights for lighting an area from above, and black wall spotlights for reading, artwork or a staircase. Check the listing for where a spotlight can be mounted before you plan the wiring. Many have adjustable heads, so you can angle the beam onto a worktop, a painting or a doorway, and turn it again when the furniture moves.
Then decide on the number of heads. We stock single spotlights for picking out a chair or a shelf, and multi-light spotlights that spread light across a wider area. A few are bars, which line their heads up along a straight base. If you have a black spotlight bar in mind, measure the worktop or corridor it must cover, since a row of heads lights a long stretch more evenly than a lone head.
Bulbs and dimming for black spotlights
Most of ours take GU10 bulbs, a twist-and-lock cap that is widely available in LED. With a GU10 fitting, the bulb you choose sets the brightness and the colour of the light, so you can change the mood later without changing the spotlight. Some take E14, a small screw cap. Where a spotlight takes bulbs, check whether they are supplied before you order. Many run on integrated LED instead, so there is no bulb to buy or fit.
Many are dimmable. To dim a bulb-fitted spotlight, you also need dimmable bulbs and a dimmer switch that suits LED. With integrated LED, fit a dimmer only if the listing says the spotlight is dimmable.
Choosing light colour for black spotlights
Colour temperature does as much for the mood of a room as the fitting itself. Many give a warm white light. Warm white is the gentler choice for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways in the evening. A few give cool white, which looks sharper over a worktop or a desk. A few let you change the colour temperature yourself, which helps in a room that does different jobs through the day.
If you are buying GU10 bulbs, 2700K gives a soft, warm glow, 3000K is a shade whiter, and 4000K is a cool, neutral white. Keep to the same colour temperature across a room, as warm and cool light side by side on the same ceiling looks patchy.
IP ratings on black spotlights
Almost all of our black spotlights are rated IP20, which means they are made for dry rooms only. If you are lighting a bathroom, choose from those and ask a qualified electrician where in the room the fitting can go, as that depends on the rating and on the layout. The others on this page are for dry rooms, so keep them away from baths, showers and basins. In a kitchen, place them clear of direct steam from the hob and the kettle.
Matching black spotlights to your other lights
If the room already has black ceiling lights or black wall lights, keep to a single finish across the fittings so they read as a set. Black varies more than you might expect, and a matt black beside a gloss black can look like a near miss. Most of our black spotlights are matt, which keeps glare and reflections off the fitting itself. A few have a satin sheen, so check the finish on the listing before you order. The same goes for pendant lights and switch plates in that room.
Many pair the black with another finish, and we stock black and gold spotlights for a warmer edge. A few bring in wood for a softer, more natural look.
Caring for a black spotlight finish
A matt or painted black finish is easy to look after with a light touch. Switch off and let the spotlight cool, then dust it with a soft dry cloth, wiping the face of the bulb or LED too, as dust there weakens the beam. Black shows dust more readily than paler finishes, so a quick wipe now and then keeps the outline crisp. Avoid abrasive pads, polish and solvent cleaners, which can dull or mark the surface. Like any painted finish, it can scratch if it is knocked or scrubbed, so take care with stepladders and tools when you fit bulbs, and angle adjustable heads gently with the power off.
