Description

The Zairya is a tall cylindrical pouffe, 52cm high and 45cm across, upholstered all over in a handwoven jute and cotton fabric. The ground is ribbed, cream cotton cord alternating with natural jute so the surface reads as fine vertical ridges. A band runs right round the middle: a row of charcoal triangles pointing down, a thin charcoal line, then a wide rust chevron stripe on cream, another charcoal line, and a second row of charcoal triangles pointing up. The top is flat with a softly rounded shoulder, and the base finishes in a plain cream cotton band.

At 52cm it stands higher than a footstool and level with a dining chair seat, which is what makes it usable three ways: as a low seat pulled up to a coffee table, as a footrest beside an armchair, or as a side table with a tray set on the flat top. It is rated to 80kg. The round 45cm footprint fits the gap at the end of a sofa or the corner of a reading chair without squaring off against the furniture around it, and at 6.45kg it moves with one hand.

The fabric is jute and cotton, handwoven on traditional Indian looms, and the triangles and chevrons are worked into the weave in dyed yarn rather than sitting on the surface. Because the pattern is woven rather than cut to a repeat, the point at which the band closes on itself falls in a different place on each pouffe, and the depth of the rust and the charcoal shifts from one to the next.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

52cm high and 45cm across, and it weighs 6.45kg.

Can it be sat on?

Yes. It takes up to 80kg, and it is made to work as a seat, a footrest or a side table with a tray on top.

What is it made from?

Jute and cotton, handwoven on a traditional Indian loom.

Will the pattern be the same on every pouffe?

Not exactly. The bands are woven by hand, so the run of the chevrons and the depth of the rust and charcoal differ from one pouffe to the next.

How do I look after it?

Spot clean only, with a damp cloth or a sponge. Colours may fade if it stands in direct sunlight.
